Southcott Awards 2003 Rowe Residence - 7 Rostellan Street, St. John's The awarding of a Southcott to this project marks a first for this event. In the past architecturally significant buildings from farther back in history have been the only ones recognized. It has come to light that there is a period of architecture in Newfoundland that is slowly being covered with historical motifs from totally unrelated styles of architecture. This period would be what is known as "Modernist" during which a very distinct style of architecture was produced. Modernist buildings have clean simple lines, much composition accentuates the horizontal, materials are either monolithic such as concrete or employed with minimal details such as masonry & wood. Large expanses of glass are common and peaked rooves and symmetry are almost non-existent. It was at this time that the term "dynamic" was important in design. Up until now the buildings from this period, in particular from the 1940's to 60's, have been ignored by historic preservation by-laws and the public has not been made aware, as with older buildings, that this era is one worthy of preservation. #7 Rostellan Street, was designed by Architect, F. Paul Meschino. It was originally the home of the Goldstone family and was built in the early 1950's. It is situated on a sloping, treed property overlooking the Rennies River. Unlike older projects this house was not in complete disrepair when purchased by Mr. Derek Rowe. Attention was focussed on the preservation of the exterior of the house. All existing windows are original and where necessary clapboard was milled to match the existing ones and used to replace rotten boards, all of the stonework and parging is in intact and all the wooden louvers below the windows are original. The restoration work was carried out with the expertise of local architects, The PHB Group. Mr. Rowe not only preserved the exterior, he also employed Architect, Robert Mellin, to design a garage addition for the house. This was done with utmost sympathy to Meschino's original design. The flat rooves and stepping layout of the garage is completely in keeping with the remainder of the house. |
