Southcott Awards 1990 Peace Cove Inn
Nestled in the heart of Trinity East is Peace Cove Inn a turn of the century home that was owned by Skipper Dick Fowlow. The property originally served as the Fowler home and also accommodated the skipper's crew when fitting out for the Labrador fishery. The adjacent building served as a general store and later a post office with the 2nd storey used as a twine loft. Art Andrews has a strong bond to Trinity East as it was his birthplace. Art has had a summer residence there for many years. In 1988 he and his wife Louise purchased the skipper's house from his grandson with the intention of restoring the property for operation as a hospitality home. The house fell into disrepair over the last few years. There were problems with the roof that caused considerable rot in the structure. Wiring was in need of upgrading and the property needed a complete facelift inside and out. Art and Louise rose to the occasion and have successfully accomplished their objective in that the property has been totally upgraded and restored. Every detail was taken care of including color matching with the original exterior paint. The addition was also upgraded and the owners, with the help of local carpenters reproduced a curved mansard roof and dormer windows on the second floor to match the facade of the adjacent house. Their efforts are to be commended as they offer a great service to tourists visiting our province with accommodations that would make "Skipper Dick" proud. |
