Southcott Awards 1991 Mockbeggar Property The Mockbeggar Property consists of 5 buildings: the Bradley House, the Carpenters Shop, the Fish Store and two other structures awaiting restoration.
In 1871, Jabez Saint built the Bradley House on property acquired by his father from John H. Warren. The lumber used in the construction is said to have come from an older house that stood on this property. It is likely that Saint's in-laws, the "Strathies", would have assisted in its construction. When Saint went bankrupt in 1879, he was indebted to Baine Johnston and Company, who seized his property, but allowed him to occupy the house. In 1898 the property was acquired by John Roper, but Saint was allowed to remain until his death in 1903, at a nominal rent. After Saint's death, the Ropers took possession of the property and eventually passed it to their son-in-law, Senator Gordon Bradley, a prominent figure in the confederation battle. Senator Bradley will be best remembered as one of the original signatories to the Terms of Union with Canada. It was Senator Bradley who made the most notable addition to the House, in the form of a quasi-Gothic library. The most striking out-building, the Fish Store, pre-dates the House and is believed to have been constructed in the early 1820's. Also on the property, the Carpenter Shop houses the tools of Senator Bradley's father, who was a noted furniture maker. In 1981, the Bradley Family donated the property to the Newfoundland Government who declared it a Historic Site in 1988. Prior to its official opening in 1990, the House, Fish Store and Carpentry Shop all underwent substantial restoration. Two other buildings on the property, the Retail Store and the Liver Factory, will be restored in the near future. Historic resources plans to use the Confederation struggle as the theme for this property. Eventually the Fish Store will house an appropriate interpretation centre. |
