The Newfoundland Historic Trust invites nominations for its 26th Annual Southcott Awards for built heritage preservation in Newfoundland and Labrador. To download the 2010 nomination form, click here (PDF). Deadline is Thursday, April 15, 2010. If you are the owner of a heritage property you may nominate it yourself, but family, friends, contractors, builders or architects may also nominate a property or individual. AWARD CRITERIA Nominations are considered for finished, architectural restoration projects. The committee considers architectural design, quality of conservation work, preservation of original features, use of traditional materials, and the integrity of the structure and its surrounding site. Awards may be considered for excellence in long term maintenance of heritage properties. Properties which show great age and little alteration to the original structure and its surrounding landscape will be assessed on thier original architectural integrity. Awards may be considered for new or infill construction which is sensitive to the historic context (architecture, streetscape, viewscape, etc.) of its environment. New construction will be assessed for how sympathetic the new design is to the historic character of the surrounding area. Structures which display an architectural style that is not particularly historic, but of a recognizable modern design, like the Arts and Crafts or Brutalism styles of architecture, will be considered. Specifically, those structures which may have been built in the early to mid-twentieth century are eligible for nomination. Awards are considered for other noteworthy built heritage preservation projects. These may include recognition of a particular individual who displays excellence in his or her craft (eg. window restorer, heritage carpenter, etc.), a business or organization which displays exemplary leadership in heritage conservation or anybody you think is doing an excellent job in retaining the province's built heritage. |
