Southcott Awards 1991 Masonic Lodge The Masonic Lodge was started in Grand Bank in December of 1876. The initial meetings were held in homes of members. It was noted in the early By-Laws that: "no owner of a home in which a lodge is held, shall hold an office in such a lodge, except by a special dispensation from the District Grand Lodge." This may be the forerunner of the conflict of interest legislation in the Province.
The builder, Mr. Bell, was given a contract to erect a two-storey building at a total cost of $2,841.05. Obviously, a dollar went a lot further in 1904. In the early eighties, the building was substantially renovated with much of the architectural detail being removed and most of the windows boarded up or changed. Subsequently, in 1990, it was decided to restore the building to its original classical style, with financial assistance from the Heritage Foundation. The vinyl siding was removed and the building was re-clapboarded. The column capitals were replaced and windows restored to their original style. It should be noted that all aspects of the window construction were carried out by the restoration team. Components of the window construction were fabricated from stock, including the mouldings, pediments and other details. The original window placements were reinstated, where they had been boarded up. The people of Grand Bank should take pride in their efforts in restoring Fidelity Lodge as their work remains faithful to the intents of the original builders. In 1989, Fidelity Lodge was designated as a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. |
