Advocacy Programs Belvedere Convent and Orphanage Buildings Awarded Heritage Designation News Release
The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador has designated another group of buildings as Registered Heritage Structures. These include several religious structures, private residences, a museum, a commercial building and a bed and breakfast. The buildings, situated in St. John's, Harbour Grace, Petite Forte, Port de Grave and Trinity were designated as heritage structures at a recent meeting of the Heritage Foundation's board of directors on Sept. 25, 1999. In St. John's a grouping of important structures that form part of a
Roman Catholic precinct have been designated, including Presentation Convent
and adjoining school, Military Road; the Bishop's Palace and Library on
Bonaventure Ave; Mount St. Francis, Merrymeeting Road; Belvedere Convent
and Orphanage, Bonaventure Ave. Built between 1824 and 1923,
these buildings, along with several others in the area that were previously
designated, form a significant religious heritage building district.
