Belvedere Convent and Orphanage
St. John's city council has decided not to designate the Belvedere convent

St. John's city council has decided not to designate the Belvedere convent buildings as heritage property.

The Sisters of Mercy currently pay about 60 thousand dollars a year to maintain property they no longer use.

The buildings are more marketable to developers without the heritage designation.

Councilor Shannie Duff says all possible uses for the buildings should have been explored before the designation was decided.

Mayor Andy Wells the sisters themselves did just that. He says they approached all government departments, the avalon east school board and numerous city developers, but without luck.

Wells says the real problem is the lack of funding for heritage preservation from the province and the federal government.
