Belvedere Convent and Orphanage

The Telegram, Tuesday, October 17, 2000, page 5.

A proposal by Myles-Leger Ltd. to redevelop the former Belvedere convent and orphanage site will go to a public meeting, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 9.

Shelley Morrissey, spokeswoman for the Centre City Neighbourhood Association, said the latest proposal for the combined residential/commercial development is a "good start".

The city's planning committee did not reach consensus on the proposal, but decided to let it go to a public hearing.

The fate of the two historic structures depends on whether Myles-Leger can find tenants.

Coun. Dennis O'Keefe has said the city is making the same mistake that was made when Brother Rice school was built about 38 years ago without recreational facilities.

He said he can't vote in favour of the development because there isn't enough recreational space in the area of four schools - three public and one private.

In a separate proposal, Sobeys wants to build a supermarket on nearby Shamrock Field, a former soccer field owned by the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corp.

Deputy Mayor Marie White told O'Keefe at the recent planning meeting that the Avalon East School Board has no interest in the Belvedere land.
